Free Alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs: What Still Costs

Xtrusio10 min read

Short answer

A free alternative to Semrush can cover parts of your work, but replacing the subscription means replacing its data and workflows too. OpenSEO has free, MIT-licensed software; self-hosted SEO data is paid, and its hosted plan starts at $10 a month. For the AI-citation part, start with Xtrusio, then choose the research tools your keyword, backlink and audit work still needs.

Xtrusio: the AI-citation job

Xtrusio is our product. It connects buyer questions, AI answers and cited pages to content plans, publication records and later checks of the exact published URL. Its public pricing is: Free self-serve plan; managed service with a free trial, then tiered plans (details on request). Choose it for the AI-answer work rather than treating a keyword-volume estimate as citation evidence. See the collection methodology.

Ahrefs Free: your verified websites

Ahrefs Free, formerly Webmaster Tools, includes auditing and your own site's search and backlink information. The official page lists 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month and up to 1,000 backlinks or keywords visible at once. This verified-site access does not provide unrestricted research on competitors. Match the allowance to the size of the site you maintain.

Google Search Console: your site on Google

Search Console is free. It reports queries, impressions and clicks for your property, helps diagnose indexing problems and shows links to your site. Start with pages that get impressions but earn few clicks. It is not a database of competitors' keywords or a market-wide search-volume tool. The Search Analytics API also does not guarantee every row.

Google Keyword Planner: ideas and demand estimates

Keyword Planner generates keyword ideas and search estimates for advertising planning. It requires a Google Ads account; Google's current help page says billing information and completed account setup are required for basic keyword suggestions. Estimates can appear as ranges, so preserve the displayed range instead of inventing an exact monthly figure. Advertising competition is not organic keyword difficulty. Check the location and date range before comparing tools.

Bing Webmaster Tools: a second engine's evidence

Bing Webmaster Tools offers free reports, keyword research, backlink information and an on-demand Site Scan for technical issues. Use it to understand Bing performance and find work on your site. Its keyword demand concerns Bing searchers; do not relabel it Google volume or assume the audit has the same crawl scope as another tool. Compare the pages and exports you need.

Google Trends uses sampled searches and scales relative interest from 0 to 100 for the selected time and geography. It helps compare seasonality and changing interest. A score of 100 is a relative peak, not 100 searches. Low-volume terms can display zero, which does not establish that nobody searched. Keep location, time period and term or topic settings fixed.

OpenSEO self-hosted: free software, paid data

OpenSEO belongs in this list because its code is free under MIT. That does not make its keyword and backlink data free. Separate the license, data balance, hosting and maintenance work. The next sections explain the two payment routes.

Turn the AI-answer gap into useful work

Read the returned answer before assigning work: which businesses appear, which sources support the claims and whether your exact page is among them. A missing explanation may need a better page; conflicting product facts may need correction at their sources. Xtrusio connects approved question-level content plans, publication records and later checks for the exact published URL. A completed page and a later citation remain separate records.

What is free in OpenSEO?

The every-app/open-seo repository is real, and its license is MIT. Its documented workflows include keyword research, rank tracking, competitor information, backlinks, audits and AI visibility.

At our October 18 check, GitHub's repository API reported 23,997 stars. That is a dated popularity count, not a test of data accuracy or feature equivalence.

The repository explains that self-hosting still needs a DataForSEO API key and that users pay the provider for SEO data. DataForSEO's pricing page describes pay-as-you-go billing, no subscription and a $50 minimum top-up. That top-up funds an account balance; it is not a $50 monthly subscription or the cost of one search.

Separate the software license from the resources it uses. A free interface can still generate paid requests, require hosting or consume time maintaining a working setup. Decide which of those costs your existing equipment and team already cover.

Read the bill before comparing it with a subscription

OpenSEO's hosted pricing is a separate option: $10/month including $10 of usage credits. Its page says an active subscription is required, included credits reset each billing cycle and purchased top-up credits do not expire.

The default estimator shown during our check made the distinction concrete:

Displayed estimator item

Displayed workload

Estimated usage

Keyword research

100 searches per month

$5.40

Backlink checks

20 checks per month

$1.58

Rank tracking

217 checks per month

$0.54

AI prompt tracking

0 checks per month

$0.00

Total

The displayed workload above

$7.52; estimated bill $10/month

The arithmetic is $5.40 + $1.58 + $0.54 = $7.52. The displayed bill remains $10 because that usage fits within the included credits. This is the vendor's estimate, not our invoice or a tested campaign. Change the workload before using it for your budget, especially if you plan to check AI prompts.

What the paid suites still add

Paid suites can combine competitor research, larger data allowances, historical records, scheduled tracking and exports. Match the plan to the decisions you need to make.

The current Ahrefs page lists Lite at $129/month, but it also lists Starter at $29/month and an Ahrefs Free offering. Calling $129 the minimum amount anyone must pay for Ahrefs would miss those options. Compare the plan that supplies your required work.

The current Semrush page labels its entry paid option SEO: $139/month on monthly billing, or $117.33/month billed annually. Its Starter SEO + AI Search package is $199/month on monthly billing. Use the current package name and billing term rather than comparing a remembered Pro price with a different bundle.

A smaller bill can be a good reason to change tools. It becomes a defensible saving only after you establish that the new setup completes the work you need. An unused subscription and an inadequate replacement are both worth avoiding.

Test replacement with the same task, not the same feature name

“Backlinks” on two menus does not establish that the tools found the same links. Ahrefs describes its own backlink index and crawling infrastructure. OpenSEO documents a paid external data dependency. Those facts do not establish an equal dataset, and we have not run a matching-domain coverage benchmark here.

Before canceling a subscription, make a small acceptance record. Use a domain you are authorized to analyze and questions tied to decisions you already make. The following is a proposed comparison method, not a report of completed tests.

Keyword task. Keep the exact phrase, country, language and observation date fixed. Record the volume, difficulty definition, returned suggestions and available export. A Google Search Console query report concerns your site's recorded search performance; it is not the same measurement as a market-wide keyword-volume estimate. The Search Analytics API documentation also warns that its responses do not guarantee every data row.

Backlink task. Keep the target scope fixed: a page, subdomain or whole domain. Record live versus historical scope, filters, referring-domain count, returned rows and export limits. Open a sample of returned referring pages and check whether the links are present. A larger headline total alone does not tell you which tool supports your outreach or cleanup decision.

Rank-tracking task. Keep the keyword, location, device and check date together. Note whether you are comparing a current result with a scheduled observation. A weekly check cannot show an event that occurred between checks unless another record captured it.

Audit task. Give both tools the same allowed URL scope. Record which pages were examined, then verify a reported problem on the relevant page. A report with fewer issues may have covered fewer pages, or it may apply different rules. Choose the report that gives your team useful, reproducible work.

For each task, write the decision before testing: “I need an export of relevant referring pages” is clearer than “I need a backlink feature.” Mark the result sufficient, insufficient or unresolved, with the supporting file. An empty or failed response belongs in unresolved until you know what happened.

Measure AI citations separately

For each ChatGPT, Claude or Google AI Overviews check, save the exact buyer question, platform, date, complete answer and source links, then compare the links with your exact published URL. Keep brand mentions without a page citation separate, and record unavailable checks separately. Xtrusio's published-URL citation method connects that evidence to delivered content; no optimizer score guarantees the next answer will cite it.

Which costs should you keep?

Keep the tools that answer decisions your team needs to make. Your own search-performance data can be a sensible starting point. Broader keyword or backlink work may justify paid data, whether you buy it through a suite or a usage-based interface.

For the AI-visibility job, make the record lead to useful work. Xtrusio connects question-level evidence to approved content, published URLs and later citation checks. That is the outcome to evaluate alongside the cost of gathering data.

The next step is small: pick one buyer question, one existing page and one decision your current subscription supports. Compare the evidence and the work required to act on it. You can start with Xtrusio when the task is turning an AI-answer gap into a content assignment and checking what follows.
