How to find competitors' keywords and what drives site traffic: A Practical, Evidence-Led Comparison
Use three evidence layers. First, export competitors' ranking keywords and top pages from an SEO database. Second, use a traffic-intelligence platform to estimate channel mix and visit trends. Third, inspect which competitors and sources appear for important buyer questions in AI answers. Treat every competitor number as an estimate. Validate only your own performance with Search Console and analytics, then prioritize topics where buyer intent, competitor evidence and a realistic business outcome overlap.

To find competitors' keywords and understand what drives site traffic, use three evidence layers. Export ranking keywords and top pages from an SEO database. Compare estimated channel mix and visit trends in a traffic-intelligence platform. Then inspect which competitors and sources appear for important buyer questions in AI answers. Validate only your own performance with Search Console and analytics.
What can competitor tools actually tell you?
Competitor research is inference, not access to another company's analytics. Search platforms model rankings, volume and click-through rates. Traffic platforms model visits and channels from their own data. AI monitoring captures observable answers, mentions and citations for a controlled question set.
Each layer answers a different question. Combining them reduces false confidence.
Evidence layer | Best question it answers | Useful output | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
Xtrusio | Which vendors and sources appear for buyer questions in AI answers? | Answer text, mentions, citations, cited URLs and engine-level comparisons | It is not a classic keyword-volume or total-traffic estimator |
Ahrefs Site Explorer | Which keywords and pages may drive organic search traffic? | Organic keywords, ranking URLs, positions and estimated traffic | Organic traffic is modelled, not actual competitor analytics |
Semrush Organic Rankings | Where does a domain rank and who shares its keyword footprint? | Keywords, pages, competitors, positions and estimated monthly traffic | Coverage depends on the selected database and top-100 rankings |
Similarweb | Which channels and visit trends may explain total site traffic? | Estimated visits, traffic sources, geography and engagement patterns | Low-volume sites and model changes can affect coverage |
Google Search Console | Which queries and pages actually performed for your site? | Clicks, impressions, CTR and average position | It cannot reveal another property's private data |
The practical rule is simple: compare competitors with estimates, but make decisions against first-party truth.
How do you find competitors' keywords?
Start with three competitor types. Business competitors sell a similar solution. Search competitors rank for the same topics. AI-answer competitors are named or cited for the buyer questions you care about. The lists will overlap, but they are rarely identical.
Enter each search competitor into a domain research tool. Select the relevant country, device and domain scope. Export keyword, ranking URL, position, volume, estimated traffic and trend. Keep branded terms separate because they reflect existing demand more than an open acquisition opportunity.
According to Ahrefs, its Organic Keywords report shows terms from its database where the target ranks. Its Top Pages report groups that evidence by landing page. Ahrefs also calls organic traffic “an estimation,” calculated from rankings, search volume and estimated click-through rate. The official Ahrefs traffic methodology is the right boundary for interpreting the number.
According to Semrush's Organic Rankings overview, the report models keywords, traffic, pages and competitors from Google's top 100 results. Use the same regional database across every domain. A country switch can change both the keyword set and the estimated opportunity.
How do you identify what drives site traffic?
Do not equate one large keyword with a site's total growth. Look for repeated patterns across pages, channels and time.
First, group exported keywords by landing page. A page ranking for 40 related terms can matter more than 40 unrelated URLs. Next, label the page type, such as product, comparison, definition, template or research. This shows the content formats associated with estimated demand.
Then compare total traffic channels. Similarweb's data methodology FAQ states that platform figures are based on estimations and algorithms. According to its keyword data FAQ, traffic share uses modelled user-behaviour data. The report includes estimates for up to 10 thousand keywords per website. Use those figures for relative patterns, not audited totals.
Finally, check your own site in Search Console. Google's Performance report guidance explains how to sort queries by clicks, CTR or impressions. Google defines CTR as “clicks divided by impressions.” These are observed Google Search results for your property, not a forecast for a competitor.
A seven-step competitor traffic workflow
Step | Action | Decision output |
|---|---|---|
1 | List business, search and AI-answer competitors separately | Three explicit comparison sets |
2 | Export one consistent keyword dataset for each search competitor | Comparable keyword and page evidence |
3 | Remove branded, irrelevant and wrong-market terms | A buyer-intent shortlist |
4 | Group terms by landing page and content format | Repeatable traffic patterns |
5 | Compare estimated channel mix and trend | Search, direct, referral, social and paid hypotheses |
6 | Capture AI answers, named vendors and cited sources | A second discovery landscape |
7 | Validate your baseline and run one controlled test | A measurable 30-to-90-day backlog |
Suppose an export contains 200 keywords. After filtering, 40 remain, which is 20% of the starting set, across 12 competitor pages. Do not publish 40 thin articles. If three of 12 page patterns survive the evidence review, the shortlist rate is 25%. Build or improve one canonical page for each pattern, then measure the same query and page cohort.
The AI-search monitoring workflow explains how question evidence becomes an SEO backlog. The AI visibility measurement guide shows why answer evidence must remain separate from search and conversion metrics.
Which opportunities should you prioritize?
Score each topic on four dimensions: buyer relevance, evidence confidence, attainable differentiation and measurable business value. A high-volume term with weak fit should lose to a smaller question tied to a real evaluation or purchase.
Look for convergence. A strong opportunity may have a relevant competitor page, rising estimated demand, repeated AI citations and a clear gap in your own coverage. Record the evidence date and source. Then define the action, owner, success metric and recheck window before production begins.
What are the main limitations?
Competitor traffic estimates are not exact visits. Keyword databases miss terms, use different volumes and update at different speeds. Geography, device and domain scope can change the result. Similar-looking traffic curves do not prove the same cause.
Search Console is first-party evidence, but it still has aggregation and privacy limits. AI answers can vary by engine, time, location and prompt wording. A mention does not equal a citation, and a citation does not prove commercial impact.
Use competitor data to form a testable hypothesis. Use your own impressions, clicks, referrals, engaged sessions and conversions to decide whether the work produced value.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see a competitor's exact website traffic?
Normally, no. Third-party platforms estimate competitor traffic from their own datasets and models. Exact sessions, sources and conversions require access to the competitor's first-party analytics.
How do I find the keywords a competitor ranks for?
Enter the competitor's domain in a search-intelligence platform, open its organic-keyword report, select the correct country and device, and export the terms with positions, landing pages, volume and estimated traffic.
Which metric matters most in competitor keyword research?
No single metric is sufficient. Combine buyer intent, current position, relevant landing page, estimated demand, trend, business fit and the strength of the evidence supporting the estimate.
Do AI answers create a separate competitor set?
Yes. An AI answer may name vendors or cite sources that differ from the domains ranking in classic search. Track those answers separately, then connect the findings to the same content and authority backlog.
