What is the difference between AEO, GEO, and SEO: Definition, Workflow and Real Use Cases

SEO improves a page's eligibility, discovery and performance in search results. AEO, or answer engine optimization, is an industry label for making a brand's information easy to answer accurately for a specific question. GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on visibility, portrayal and source attribution inside generated responses. They overlap: strong technical SEO and useful original content support all three, while AEO and GEO add question-level answer and citation measurement.

SEO improves discovery and performance in search results. AEO focuses on whether a specific question receives a clear and accurate answer. GEO focuses on how a source or brand appears inside a generated response. They are not three independent technical stacks. Are SEO, AEO and GEO separate disciplines?

The 2024 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization formalized GEO as a black-box framework for measuring source visibility in generative responses. According to the study, GEO-bench contained 10,000 queries, and some tested methods improved its visibility metric by up to 40%. A separate Perplexity evaluation reported improvement of up to 37%. Those results belong to the paper's tests. They are not a promise for a commercial campaign or every current model.

How does one buyer question move through all three workflows?

SEO makes the relevant product, security and integration pages crawlable, distinct and internally connected. It checks whether the correct canonical pages are indexed and earn search demand.

AEO creates a precise answer using confirmed residency scope, integration detail and links to evidence. It then checks whether answer systems describe the capability accurately, rather than merely mentioning the brand.

GEO examines which sources are cited, how the platform is portrayed and whether independent evidence supports the claim. Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in search results. Crawler access creates an opportunity for discovery; it does not guarantee selection.

Where do these labels break down?

AEO and GEO do not have one universal metric, certification or technical checklist. Products use the labels differently. Engines also change retrieval, models, interfaces and citation behavior, so results must be dated and retained with the underlying answer.

Google's guidance is especially important: its generative features remain rooted in core Search systems. A separate “GEO page” that duplicates a useful SEO page can create clutter instead of value. Original evidence, clear structure and crawl access are stronger foundations than a renamed checklist.
