Can Agencies Use LLM Audits for SEO? What the Audit Can Prove
Short answer
Yes, agencies can use LLM audits for SEO, but an LLM's critique is a list of leads, not proof of a ranking, crawl or citation problem. Use it to spot unclear answers and possible gaps, then confirm each claim in Search Console, the live page, crawler documentation and saved AI answers. Only the verified observations belong in a client report.

Which kind of LLM audit does the client need?
The phrase covers two different jobs. In the first, an agency asks a language model to critique a page: Is the product clear? Does the opening answer the buyer's question? Are claims supported? That is an editorial exercise. It can help a writer find gaps, but the model's suggestion is not proof that a crawler blocked the page or that a ranking fell.
In the second, the agency asks buyer questions in AI search and records the actual answers, brand mentions and cited URLs. That is an AI visibility audit. It can establish what a defined set of engines returned on a given date. It does not establish that the same answer will appear for every user or that one edit caused a later change.
Both jobs can support SEO work. Google's SEO starter guide remains the reference for ordinary Search fundamentals. Google's AI features guide says that AI Overviews and AI Mode use the foundation of Search and that eligible supporting links must be indexed and able to show a snippet. A client should not receive a report that treats traditional Search and AI answers as the same metric.
Put every finding into one of three evidence lanes
Before the account manager writes a recommendation, label the observation:
LLM opinion: the model says the copy is vague, a comparison is thin or a heading omits a buyer question. This is a useful editorial lead. Give the reviewer the exact prompt and page text so the judgment can be checked.
Tool observation: Search Console shows an impression pattern, a URL inspection gives an indexing state, or a server log shows a crawler request. Record the property, page, time period and export. The Google Generative AI performance report gives dedicated impressions for AI features, but those figures still require interpretation alongside the broader Performance report.
Validated client fact: the product owner confirms an integration, price, certification or service claim, with a current source that can be quoted. A model should not infer product capabilities from old pages and have them repeated as fact.
The client report should say which lane supports each recommendation. A sentence may use more than one lane, but the lanes must not be silently merged. “The model thinks the page is hard to parse” and “Googlebot could not fetch the URL” are different claims and demand different checks.
Work an example before sending an audit to the client
Imagine an LLM returns: “This integration page cannot be cited because its FAQ schema is missing.” That sounds decisive. It is only a hypothesis. Start by opening the current page as a reader. Does it answer the buyer's integration question directly? Does the cited feature claim match the product documentation? Then inspect the page's Search Console indexing and relevant performance. For crawler access, use the actual robots rules and logs rather than the model's guess. Google's robots specification and OpenAI's crawler documentation describe their own access controls.
Next, ask the agreed buyer question in the engines the client selected, and save the full answer and cited URLs. If the page is absent from that answer, write “not cited in this recorded answer” with the engine and date. Do not write “cannot be cited.” A missing citation may have several explanations, and the answer can change. The Xtrusio raw-answer guide shows why the answer text and URL list matter more than a freestanding score.
Finally, choose the action that the evidence supports. If the page is indexed but does not answer a specific buyer question, revise the answer and verify the product claim. If it is inaccessible to a relevant crawler, investigate the access rule. If an AI answer cites a rival's deeper explanation, inspect the difference before commissioning another article. One model sentence should not decide the production work by itself.
How can an agency make the process repeatable?
Use a stable panel of buyer questions for each client. Give every question an owner, product, buyer stage and intended page. Record the engine, date, language and region for each observation. Keep branded questions separate from category and comparison questions. When the panel changes, version it; otherwise, the next report's percentage may move because the questions changed rather than because the client's visibility did.
Then make the editorial handoff explicit. The strategist checks whether a page already covers the question. The writer drafts the answer and sources. The client verifies product facts. The publisher records the URL. The analyst checks the later AI answer for that exact URL. Xtrusio's content-priority workflow links a gap to the client objective and checks for an existing page before creating a task.
An agency that wants help carrying the work through can use Xtrusio to save question-level answers and citations, draft a plan from searches and sources, get a human approval and inspect whether a later answer cites the published page. Its Citation-Grade Content method is a managed editorial process for evidence, answer quality and destination fit. Neither a score nor a draft predicts a citation.
A client-report signoff that takes one minute
For each material finding, the account manager should be able to complete this sentence: “For [buyer question], on [engine, market and date], the saved answer [named or did not name] the client and cited [URLs]. The proposed action is [specific page or placement], owned by [person]. The product facts were approved by [person]. We will recheck [the same question and intended URL] on [date].” If any bracket is blank, keep the item in research rather than presenting it as a completed diagnosis.
There are three separate verbs in that sentence: observed, proposed and verified. The report should not change “we propose a page” into “the page improved visibility” until a later answer provides evidence. The exact-page citation guide distinguishes a mention or domain-level link from a citation of the page made for the question.
What does an LLM audit not prove?
It does not prove that Google applied a hidden penalty, that a particular schema field causes citations, or that a page will rank because a model likes the copy. It does not turn one answer into a population-wide market share estimate. It does not prove a traffic trend from a single screenshot. Search Console, server logs, publisher records and saved answers each speak to different parts of the problem.
An LLM can still be valuable as a second editor. Have it identify unsupported claims, ambiguous headings and questions a buyer may ask next. Keep the prompt and the page version in the work record. Ask a person with product knowledge to accept or reject the recommendation. The most useful agency audit is not the one that produces the longest list; it is the one whose significant findings can be reproduced and acted on.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT audit a website for SEO?
It can review supplied page text and suggest clarity or structure changes. A technical SEO audit still needs evidence from the live site, Search Console and crawl or server data. Do not treat a model's critique as a measured ranking diagnosis.
Can an LLM tell me whether a page is indexed?
A model's statement is not the site's indexing record. Check the property and URL in Search Console and record when the check was made.
Are AI visibility audits the same as SEO audits?
No. The visibility audit captures selected AI answers, mentions and cited URLs. A traditional SEO audit examines Search performance and technical issues. Both may inform the same content plan.
How do agencies prove a new page worked?
Record the intended URL and buyer question, then inspect a later answer from the selected engine. A citation of that exact URL is observable evidence for that question and run; it is not a guarantee or proof of causation.
What should a client receive?
A question set and denominator, dated saved answers, sources behind material claims, specific tasks with owners and a recheck plan. Ask for one complete example rather than only an aggregate score.
