How to Correct Company Information in ChatGPT: Fix Wrong Product Facts

Save the exact buyer question and ChatGPT answer, then open its cited pages to locate the wrong company fact. Correct your own page or request a correction from the outside publisher, and check that ChatGPT can reach the current information. Ask the same question again and compare the answer and sources. You cannot directly edit every future ChatGPT response.

If ChatGPT gets a fact about your company wrong, save the exact question and answer, open its cited pages, and find where the error begins. Correct an inaccurate page you own, ask a third-party publisher to correct theirs, or give ChatGPT the right source and ask it to search again. Then repeat the buyer's question and compare the answer and links. There is no switch that edits every future ChatGPT answer about your company.

The useful question is not simply “How do I make ChatGPT say the right thing?” It is which fact is wrong, which source supports the answer, and who can correct that source? A company described as an internal tool when it sells a service needs a different fix from a company whose current pricing page is being summarized badly.

How do you find the wrong company fact in ChatGPT?

Start with the question a buyer would ask, not a prompt that supplies the correct answer. “Is this product available to buy, or is it an internal tool?” tests a real buying decision. Save the full wording, the answer, the date, whether ChatGPT used web search, and every source link beside the disputed sentence. Include the country or language if it changes the buying question.

Open the links. OpenAI says ChatGPT search citations can be incomplete, old, or wrong, and recommends checking whether each linked page actually supports the answer. Do not assume that a citation beside a paragraph supports every sentence in that paragraph.

Here is what the first check looks like in ChatGPT. On October 4, 2026, we asked a logged-out session whether Xtrusio's free evaluation is the same as its ongoing managed service. ChatGPT answered no and attached a source chip. That answer was broadly correct; this is an example of how to save the buyer question and check its cited pages, not a claim that this ChatGPT result needed correction.

The exact question and the start of ChatGPT's answer, with a source chip beside a service description.

Opening the chip showed the Xtrusio homepage and its AI answer engine monitoring guide. A cited page is a place to check the claim, not an automatic stamp of accuracy for the whole answer.

The source panel for that same answer shows which pages to open before judging the product description.

Software like Xtrusio can keep the buyer question, saved answer and cited pages together while a team fixes the public information. In one saved Xtrusio record, a Claude answer called Xtrusio an internal tool even though the service is commercially offered. The screen below shows the question, the relevant answer passage and its cited pages. This is a Claude record, not a ChatGPT result; it shows why a favorable-looking summary cannot replace reading the actual product description.

The saved question and answer point to a specific fact to correct. The cited pages tell the team where to start.

This table is a triage tool, not a promise that one edit will change an answer. It stops a common waste: rewriting your homepage when the wrong statement sits on an influential comparison page you do not control.

Which page should you correct first?

Take the buyer's exact requirement and find the sentence that answers it. If your company sells software to outside customers, say so plainly on the product page. Name the product, who can buy it, how access works, and any real limits. If the truth is “available after a sales conversation,” do not replace it with “self-service sign-up.” A correction has to improve accuracy, not just sound more favorable.

Where a third-party page is wrong, give its editor a short correction request: the page URL, the quoted passage, the proposed replacement and a public primary source. If a directory profile is yours to edit, correct it there as well. A company page, pricing page and directory profile that contradict one another leave a buyer and an AI assistant with the same uncertainty.

Here is the question to carry into the fix: can a buyer open one current page and verify this product fact without asking you privately? If not, the page is not yet doing its job.

Publish the corrected fact on a stable URL that works without a login. Put the direct answer near the heading a buyer would expect, then add the evidence: product details, documentation, a demo, or a dated change note where appropriate. Link connected pages to the same current explanation. A new blog post that says one thing while your main product page still says another may make the conflict worse.

Check access if your public page never appears among the sources. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT Search and says sites that opt out will not appear in its search answers, although they may appear as navigational links. OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot serve different purposes. A site can allow search crawling without choosing to allow training crawling. Your webmaster can check the robots rules, host response and any content-delivery-network block for the page that contains the fact.

Access makes a page eligible to be found. It does not decide which page ChatGPT will cite. That is why the first task is to make the product fact correct and easy to verify, then check whether the answer and its links change.

What if ChatGPT gives the wrong fact without citing a page?

First check whether the answer used web search. OpenAI explains that a response without search can rely on what the model learned earlier, while a searched answer can draw on current web pages. Ask the same buyer question with Search enabled and open any sources it returns. If the searched answer is accurate but an answer without search is not, updating a website cannot directly rewrite the model's past training.

You can also ask ChatGPT to answer again using a specific current page and date. That helps you diagnose whether the right information is readable; it is not a change to what every other user will see. Keep making the accurate fact public on the pages buyers and publishers use.

For a response that raises a safety, legal, intellectual-property or similar concern, use OpenAI's reporting channels. Those channels serve particular reporting purposes. They are not a general form that guarantees a product-description edit across ChatGPT.

How will you know the correction worked?

Keep three results separate. First, did the page or profile change? Second, does a later answer state the product fact correctly? Third, does it cite the corrected URL? A live edit is work completed; an accurate later answer is the buyer-facing result you wanted. A citation can help you see which source was used, but an accurate answer might cite another page.

Use a small record for each buyer question:

Keep

Example entry

Buyer question and conditions

Exact wording, ChatGPT Search, country, date

Wrong statement

The quoted product description in the first answer

Source and correction

Page URL, old passage, new passage, date changed

Later answer

Full answer, whether the fact is right, and cited URLs

Check the same question again under comparable conditions. One changed answer is encouraging, but answers can vary with wording and sources. Keep the actual answer and links so you can see whether the corrected fact persists, rather than calling a single mention a permanent win.

If your team has several product facts to repair, request a free Xtrusio evaluation with your buyer questions and public proof. Use the saved answers and source pages to decide which correction deserves work first; agree any ongoing writing, outside-page outreach or repeat checking separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I directly edit what ChatGPT says about my company?

No. You can correct the public pages ChatGPT may use, ask a third-party publisher to update an inaccurate page, and retest the same buyer question. Asking ChatGPT to use a specific current source helps diagnose the error, but it does not edit every future answer.

How long does it take for a corrected company fact to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timetable. A web-backed answer can use an updated public page after it becomes available to search, but the page may not be selected. Save the original question and check the answer and sources again over time.

Should I block GPTBot if I want ChatGPT Search to find my correction?

OpenAI documents separate controls: OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT Search, while GPTBot is for potential model training. A site can allow the search crawler while disallowing GPTBot. Check your robots rules and whether the corrected public URL can be reached.
