Claude Pro vs Max: Usage Limits, Price and Which to Pick
Short answer
Start with Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Move to Claude Max at $100 a month only if you hit Pro's limits several times a week or want Fable inside your plan. Max has the same features as Pro. The price gap buys five times Pro's usage every five hours and every week, Fable for up to half your weekly limit, and $100 a month in API credits. Those API credits do not work in Claude Code or the Claude apps. The old Max 20x tier is now called Ultra and costs $200 a month. All prices here were checked 2 November 2026.

Pick Pro if, pick Max if
You are a Pro user cut off mid-session several times a week. You want to know whether paying five times as much is worth it.
Pick Pro if Claude is a regular tool rather than the center of your working day. It includes Claude Code, projects and access to more Claude models. It is also the only one of these plans with annual billing.
Pick Max if stopped sessions regularly cost you time. Anthropic tells Pro users to consider Max when they consistently hit limits and need more capacity for larger repositories. Max is also the first plan that includes Fable within the weekly allowance.
Watch the pattern, not one bad day. A plan should fit your usual week, not the heaviest hour you can remember.
In our view, one limit on a busy day is not a reason to pay another monthly fee. A repeated limit, several times a week, is a better trigger because it shows the smaller plan no longer fits your normal workload.
What the extra $80 a month buys, and what it does not
Max gives you everything in Pro plus more usage. Claude Code, projects and the paid-plan model selection are not Max-only features. Paid plans also share the same context-window rules: the newest models support up to a 1M token context window, while others support 500K or 200K tokens.
The extra money buys a larger usage allowance, Fable inside the plan and $100 in monthly API credits. It does not buy a separate Claude Code pool. Web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draw from the same pool. The price was checked 2 November 2026.
Anthropic's pricing page lists priority access at high-traffic times for Max, while its Pro help article also lists priority access during high-traffic periods as a Pro benefit. We keep that conflict out of the plan table because Anthropic's own pages do not agree on it.
How Pro and Max usage limits work
Pro has a five-hour limit and a weekly limit across all models. Max has the same kinds of limits, plus a separate weekly limit for Fable. A five-hour period starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account.
There is no fixed message count. How quickly you use the allowance depends on the model, chat length, file size, conversation complexity and features. One long coding session can therefore consume more than several short questions.
You can see where you stand in Settings > Usage. Anthropic says it may adjust limits to manage capacity, so treat the current multiples as plan rules rather than a guaranteed message total.
Fable is the one model gap between the plans
On Pro, Fable runs on pay-as-you-go usage credits. On Max and Ultra, Fable can use up to half the weekly limit. That does not add a second allowance: other models draw from the same weekly total, and total use cannot exceed that limit.
Older guides may say Pro includes Fable 5 within its weekly allowance. Anthropic says that promotion ended on 19 July 2026. The current rule, checked 2 November 2026, is that Pro uses paid usage credits for Fable.
The API credit catch
Max includes $100 in monthly API credits for building on the Claude Platform. They work with the Claude API, Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. Pro does not receive them. The price was checked 2 November 2026.
These credits cannot be used in Claude Code, the Claude apps or for usage credits. They also expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over. If your work stays inside chat or Claude Code, do not count the API credit as $100 back in your pocket. The price was checked 2 November 2026.
Pro vs Max for Claude Code
Claude Code is included in both plans and uses the same pool as the Claude apps. If you need more coding capacity, the choice is therefore about limits, not access. Our guide to Claude Code costs covers the separate API route without repeating it here.
Anthropic is also rolling out a wrap-up allowance. On Pro it can apply once per weekly period. On Max it can apply each time you reach a five-hour limit, within the weekly limit. The feature may not be on every account yet.
For an unusually intensive coding sprint, Anthropic also suggests switching to a Claude Console account and buying API usage credits. Those are separate from the Max plan's monthly credit and from your subscription pool.
What happened to Max 20x
The former larger Max tier is no longer a second Max option. Anthropic renamed it Ultra.
The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change. Anthropic, What is the Ultra plan?, checked 2 November 2026
Ultra costs $200 a month. It gives ten times Pro's weekly usage and no five-hour limit for accounts whose identity Anthropic has confirmed. Anthropic tells Max users who consistently hit limits to consider Ultra. The price was checked 2 November 2026.
When you hit a limit: the upgrade path
Start on Claude Pro. Watch Settings > Usage. When limits become frequent, you can wait for the reset, turn on usage credits at standard API rates, or move to a larger plan.
Turn on usage credits with a monthly spend limit near $80. If you hit that limit most months, move to Max. The extra usage is billed separately from the subscription. Move to Max when the extra room is worth a predictable $100 monthly bill. Move to Ultra only if Max still interrupts regular work. The price was checked 2 November 2026.

Our example: what each plan costs in a year
The yearly totals make the size of the choice easier to see.
Our example (our calculation from published prices, checked 2 November 2026). Pro billed yearly is $200. Pro billed monthly across one year is $240. Max across one year is $1,200. Ultra across one year is $2,400. Max costs $960 more a year than monthly Pro and $1,000 more a year than yearly Pro. Pro is $20 and Max is $100, so once your usage-credit spend passes $80 a month, Max costs less (our calculation).
Prices exclude tax and use web subscriptions. Mobile prices can differ.
Switching between Pro and Max
An upgrade takes effect at once. Anthropic credits unused time on the current plan toward the new one, so you do not pay twice for the same days. If you move from annual Pro to monthly Max, unused annual value can exceed one Max billing period. Anthropic stores the excess as credit for future purchases.
A downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period. Chats, projects and files stay with the account. Anthropic offers no standard discount for individual Pro, Max or Ultra plans, and Max is monthly only.
