AI Citation Tracking Tools: Which Can Verify a Specific Page?
Use a free webmaster report to check exposure for pages you own, then use a question-level tracker to see the exact URLs an AI assistant cited. To judge an article or PR placement you paid for, save its live URL beside the buyer question, full answer, engine and check date. A domain citation count cannot tell you whether that specific page was cited.

Use a free webmaster report to see whether your own page earns AI exposure, then use a question-level tracker to see which exact URL an assistant cited for a buyer question. If you paid for a particular article or PR placement, keep its live URL beside the question, answer, engine and recheck date. A domain citation total alone cannot tell you whether that page earned a citation.
Company | Best for | Covers | Starting price | Ask before buying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Bing Webmaster Tools | Your own pages in Microsoft AI answers | Page citations, grounding queries | Free | Can you map the exact page to the query? |
Google Search Console | Your own pages in Google's AI results | Page impressions | Free | Do you need the answer or just exposure? |
Ahrefs | Search teams already using Ahrefs | Prompt answers, cited pages | Lite $129/month | Are your prompts within the included checks? |
Semrush | SEO teams tracking chosen prompts daily | Answers, cited URLs, URL search | $99/month billed annually | Is the engine and country you need included? |
Profound | Teams comparing source share across engines | Cited pages, trend | Trial, then enterprise quote | Can you export the exact URL and answer? |
Peec AI | Teams tracking prompts across models | Answers, source domains and URLs | Check current checkout | Can you follow one URL across repeat checks? |
Xtrusio | Teams wanting the page fixed and checked later | Question, sources, live URL, recheck | Free evaluation; ongoing work quoted | Who publishes the fix and checks that URL later? |
The categories matter more than a single score. A page impression, a brand mention and an exact citation answer three different questions. The table uses each provider's public documentation, checked October 4, 2026. Confirm current billing and coverage before buying.
What would prove that one article earned an AI citation?
Start with the exact URL you published. Save the buyer question, the AI engine, the answer and the cited-page list for a dated check. If that URL appears in the cited list, you have evidence of a citation in that answer. If only your domain appears, open the source detail: it may be another page on the same site. If your brand is named without a link, count that as a mention, not a page citation.
The buying question changes when a team has funded a specific article: can its live URL be followed from publication to a later answer? Software like Xtrusio can keep the question, the delivered page and a later source check together. The dated record below shows what that distinction looks like; first compare how the trackers expose URLs.
For example, an assistant might cite example.com/guides/contract-renewals while you paid to publish example.com/news/contract-report. The domain is present, but the paid page is not. That distinction is why a domain-level dashboard is insufficient for the buyer who asks, “Did the article we paid for work?”
The reverse distinction matters too. A cited article may inform an answer that does not recommend its publisher. Read the answer, not just the source badge.
What can free webmaster tools show?
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance reports citation counts for individual URLs from a verified site. Its grounding-query-to-page view connects grouped query phrases to cited pages in supported Microsoft AI experiences. Those phrases are not full buyer prompts or individual answers. For a page you own, that is a useful free starting point. It does not cover every assistant or a third-party publication you cannot verify as your property.
Google Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions by page, country, device and date for supported Google generative features. It combines AI Overviews and AI Mode. The report tells you that a page was shown, but it does not give the exact buyer question, full answer or cited-source panel. Use it for first-party exposure, then open a real AI answer when the question and citation context matter.
Which paid tools expose cited pages for your questions?
Ahrefs Brand Radar separates brand mentions, cited pages and pages found during answer generation but not cited. Its custom prompts let you test chosen questions by platform, location and frequency. Ahrefs says Lite includes 150 checks per month; its pricing page lists Lite at $129 per month. If you already subscribe, calculate the checks you need before buying an add-on.
Semrush Prompt Tracking has a Sources report that lists individual cited URLs. You can search a URL and open the prompts for which it was cited, alongside brand-mention status. The AI Visibility Base plan lists 25 custom prompts and $99 per month per domain when billed annually. Check the billing switch and your expected number of prompts before treating that as your total cost.
Profound's Answer Engine Insights documents a Pages view with individual URLs, citation-share trends and first- and last-cited dates. Its Pages documentation connects owned content with citation share and page health. Peec AI's public product table lists source analytics, and its changelog describes a drilldown from a prompt to the cited domains and URLs. Ask each vendor to show the exact URL you care about, its answer, the engine and an export. A feature name alone does not show how easily you can perform that check.
How do you connect a paid placement to the later check?
A tracker can find citations; your team still needs a list of the pages it commissioned. A question-to-publication log is useful when the team paid for six articles and wants to know which exact pages appeared, not merely whether the brand's overall citation count rose.
In a real Gemini answer to “Which Evertune alternatives track citations in both Perplexity and Gemini?”, the input, answer and a source chip are visible together below. Open the cited page to learn what the answer actually relied on. The answer's product claims are the assistant's wording, so verify them on vendor pages before using them in a buying decision.

The screenshot below shows an Xtrusio-owned article in the publication pipeline. The page is marked published, while the saved tracker shows zero citations for that article at the time of this check. Those are two separate facts. The record is useful precisely because it does not turn completed publication into a claimed AI result.

How would you compare six published URLs?
Make one row per URL, not one row per domain. If your team published six pieces, record the destination and publication date for each. Use the same buyer questions in each later check, and preserve answers even when none of the six URLs is cited. Fill the last two columns from the saved answer and its source list, not from an overall domain score.
Live URL | Page type | Buyer question | Engine and date | Exact URL cited? | Brand recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Own guide A | Own site | Category comparison | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
Own guide B | Own site | Integration fit | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
Guest page A | Guest article | Category comparison | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
Guest page B | Guest article | Security choice | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
Media page A | Media placement | Category comparison | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
Media page B | Media placement | Rollout choice | Record each check | Fill from cited URLs | Fill from answer |
The completed log separates four outcomes: an exact citation, a recommendation, both, or neither. Count page citations against the checked URLs, and recommendations against the checked answers. Those denominators differ, so do not add the rates together. Run another comparable check to see whether the pattern persists. If one media URL never appears, check whether it answers the selected questions and whether the article is accessible before buying another placement there.
What should the tool cost you?
The cheapest first step is to use the free first-party reports for pages you own and manually save a small set of real answers. When you need daily checks, several engines, competitor URLs and exports, calculate the total checks as questions × engines × locations × runs per month. Twenty questions, three engines, two locations and four monthly runs require 480 answer checks. A plan that includes only 25 prompts or 150 checks is not automatically enough for that schedule.
Compare the cost of software with the work after the alert. Someone has to confirm the source, correct a page, publish it and check the answer again. If your team can do that work, buy the monitor that gives you the cleanest URL evidence. If that handoff repeatedly stalls, compare a managed service on the live pages it produces and the later checks it records, not on the size of its dashboard.
Before signing, ask a vendor to use one of your buyer questions and one page you funded. Can you open the full answer and exact cited URL? Can you see whether the page was merely found or actually cited? Can you export the answer with date, engine and location? Can you connect the changed page to the next check? The answers are more useful than a single visibility score.
Xtrusio fits when you want that question-to-page follow-through carried out with you. Request a free evaluation using your buyer questions and the URLs you have already published; ongoing writing, placement work and repeat monitoring can be quoted separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Search Console tell me which exact page an AI answer cited?
Its generative AI performance report shows impressions by page, but it combines AI Overviews and AI Mode and does not provide the full answer or source panel. Open a real answer and its cited pages when you need that context.
Does a citation to my domain mean the article I paid for was cited?
No. Compare the full cited URL with the live URL of the article or placement. A citation to another page on the same domain is a different result.
How many checks should I budget for AI citation tracking?
Multiply the buyer questions by engines, locations and runs per month. For example, 20 questions across three engines and two locations, checked four times in a month, require 480 answer checks. Then compare that need with each plan's included checks and billing rules.
