How to Rank on ChatGPT: What Actually Helps Brands Get Mentioned

Ranking on ChatGPT is not about staying at a permanent #1 spot. The real goal is to get your brand mentioned, cited, or recommended more often when potential customers ask questions about your industry.

A brand-name question naming the brand beside a category question that leaves it out

There is no fixed formula for this, but four things are worth working on. Can ChatGPT Search access your content? Do your pages clearly answer your customers' questions? Is your brand information consistent across trusted websites? And are you tracking results over time? This is important because your brand might show up when someone searches for it directly, but disappear when they ask a general question about your category. This guide will help you find that gap and focus on what is actually worth improving.

If you want to check where your brand stands today, Xtrusio runs a fixed set of category questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. It records whether you were mentioned, where you sat in the list, which competitors took the other slots, and what the model said about you.

What "ranking on ChatGPT" actually means

There isn't one. No list, no positions, nothing to climb. Just a shortlist the model writes fresh every time, and the only question is whether you're on it.

Google keeps an index and assigns your page a position for a query. Search the same term twice and you'll usually see the same order. ChatGPT doesn't work like that.

Broadly, ChatGPT can answer from what the model already learned and, when Search is used, from information it retrieves from the web. You have much more direct control over what your website and other public sources say today than over information already learned during model training.

That's a different job from climbing a results page. It's also why agencies reached for new labels. AEO, for answer engine optimisation. GEO, for generative engine optimisation. Stretching "SEO" over it never quite fitted.

What the audit showed >In one Xtrusio audit, the brand looked healthy on brand-name questions but disappeared across the buyer-intent question set while competitors continued to appear. One strong result on your own brand name is not a measurement. That's why we test a fixed set of buyer questions instead.

Is there a way to rank higher in ChatGPT the way you would in Google?

Partly. The mechanics are different enough to trip you up, but the habit underneath is one SEO already taught you: be readable, and be talked about somewhere other than your own site.

Here's where the two diverge in ways that matter.

How you measure it

Rank trackers, Search Console

Repeated prompt testing and sampling

Based on OpenAI's published crawler and search documentation, plus observed answer behaviour. OpenAI does not publish ordering logic.

That last row causes the most trouble. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT. No impressions report, no position graph. If you want to know whether you're being named, you have to go and check, on purpose, repeatedly.

ChatGPT Search may rewrite a user's question into one or more targeted searches before building the final answer. That means the page that helps answer the question may not use exactly the same wording the buyer typed. For example, a broad CRM question could lead to narrower searches around pricing, team size, industry requirements or specific features.

What influences which companies ChatGPT names?

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact weighting. Four areas keep surfacing in testing though, and each one is something you can go and check today.

What nobody can tell you >Anyone selling you a guaranteed formula for placement is guessing. Treat everything below as observed pattern rather than confirmed mechanism, and test it in your own category before you spend on it.
Four areas worth checking: mentions, search access, company information, accuracy
Four areas worth checking. OpenAI does not publish how they are weighted.

What other sources say about you

Your own website explains what you say about your company. Independent sources add outside context. Reviews, comparison articles and industry publications count. So do directories, videos, podcasts and useful community discussions. All of it creates public information about your brand that you didn't write yourself.

The goal isn't to collect a fixed number of mentions. It's to appear naturally in credible places where your category is already being discussed.

Make sure ChatGPT Search can access your important pages

OpenAI uses different crawlers for different jobs. OAI-SearchBot is the one to check when you want your public pages to be eligible for ChatGPT Search.

GPTBot is different. It's used for content that may help improve future AI models, so a site can allow OAI-SearchBot while choosing different settings for GPTBot. ChatGPT-User is used for certain user-requested page visits and is not the main crawler for Search inclusion.

Check your robots.txt file and make sure you haven't accidentally blocked the access you actually want.

Make it clear which company you are

AI systems can get confused when a company has different names, old descriptions or inconsistent information across the web. Keep your company name, website, location, leadership details and core description consistent across the important profiles you control.

Structured data can also help machines interpret basic page information. Treat it as support though, not as a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking factor.

Keep time-sensitive information accurate

Pricing, product features, locations, leadership details and availability can change. Update those pages when the facts change, and show a useful last-updated date where it helps the reader.

Don't change dates only to make an old page look fresh. Accuracy matters more than a cosmetic timestamp.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Seven steps, in the order that usually moves things fastest. The first one takes two minutes, and it's the reason some brands never appear at all.

  • Check ChatGPT Search access
  • Find out where you currently stand
  • Rebuild your key pages as answers
  • Publish the specifics nobody else will
  • Go earn third-party mentions
  • Fix your entity data
  • Then measure again

Check ChatGPT Search access

Open your robots.txt file and check OAI-SearchBot first. This is the crawler relevant to whether your public pages can be included in ChatGPT Search. Review GPTBot and ChatGPT-User separately because OpenAI uses them for different purposes. Check OpenAI's current crawler documentation before changing any settings.

Find out where you currently stand

Write out twenty to fifty questions a real buyer would ask before choosing someone in your category. Not keywords. Full questions, the way people type them into a chat box. Run them. Write down which companies get named, in what order, and what the model says about each. This is your baseline, and without it you're guessing at whether anything you do works.

Rebuild your key pages as answers

Give each important page or section one clear primary buyer question to answer. Question-shaped subheadings. Short paragraphs. Use a table when it genuinely makes a comparison easier to scan. Cut the throat-clearing intro that takes four paragraphs to reach the point. Retrieval systems pull passages, not whole pages, so every section should stand on its own if lifted out of context.

Publish the specifics nobody else will

Real prices. Real turnaround times. Named integrations. Actual limitations of your product. Comparison pages where you say honestly who you're worse than and for whom. Vague marketing copy gives a model nothing to quote. Specific facts give retrieval systems clearer material to understand or quote, but they do not guarantee that your page will be selected.

Go earn third-party mentions

Industry directories in your vertical. Review platforms your buyers read. Guest articles on sites with real traffic. Answering questions on Reddit and Quora as yourself, usefully, without a pitch. Getting included in "best of" roundups, which sometimes just means emailing the author. Local press and business publications, which are underrated in smaller markets because the competition for them is thin.

Fix your entity data

Consistent name and address across every profile. Schema on the site. Founder and leadership names spelled the same way everywhere. An About page that plainly states what the company is, where it operates, and when it started.

Then measure again

Run the same prompts again on a consistent schedule, such as monthly. Keep the wording and testing conditions as similar as possible so you can compare one run with the next.

How do you measure ChatGPT visibility?

Not by asking once. Ask the same buyer questions repeatedly and read the pattern: how often you appear, where you sit, and what the model says about you.

For a practical audit, you might start with 20 to 50 important buyer questions depending on the size of your category. The important part is to keep the same questions between runs. Run each one several times in a clean session, with memory and personalisation off. A logged-in account with history will skew toward things you've talked about before.

Record three things every run: whether you were named at all, your position in the list, and the tone of what was said about you. Track position and sentiment separately. A higher position and a more positive description tell you different things, so do not reduce both to one number.

Track the same prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, because they retrieve differently and a gap in one is diagnostic. Then re-run monthly and watch the trend rather than reacting to a single bad week.

The same prompt run ten times across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude
A pattern becomes more useful when the same question is tested repeatedly.

Running fifty prompts by hand across three models, repeatedly, and logging it consistently takes close to a full day every month. Budget for that or automate it, but don't plan as though it's free.

Mistakes that quietly cost you visibility

The expensive ones don't look like mistakes. They look like work, which is exactly why they survive so long.

Blocked access is the first thing to rule out, and the cheapest. A decision made in 2023 during the AI backlash is still sitting in a lot of robots.txt files.

Writing for word count is another trap. A long article is not automatically more useful than a short one. If the answer is buried under several paragraphs of setup, make it easier to find. Length should follow the information the reader needs, not a target word count.

Then there's llms.txt. The proposed standard has real momentum and costs almost nothing to add. It also has no confirmed support from OpenAI as of now. Add it if you like. Don't count it as your strategy.

Quick check >Ask ChatGPT directly what it knows about your company. If the description is wrong, outdated, or mixes you up with someone else, you have a correction job rather than a promotion job. Publish clear factual pages, then get the correct version into the third-party sources the model reads.

Start with what you can see

Before you spend anything, spend an afternoon. Go and read what ChatGPT says today when someone asks about your category. That answer usually rewrites the plan.

It takes an afternoon to do roughly, and the answer usually reframes the whole plan. Then work in order. Unblock the crawlers. Restructure your key pages into direct answers. Publish the specifics your competitors are too cautious to publish. Then go and get mentioned by people who aren't you.

The audit finding described above comes from Xtrusio's own testing and is not published research. Crawler names and product behaviour change, so confirm against the live documentation rather than this page.

Xtrusio asks the questions your buyers actually type, not just your brand name, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. Then it shows which brands and sources come back in those answers. It is pre-launch right now, so access runs through the waitlist. Join the Xtrusio waitlist

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to rank on ChatGPT?

Not for placement in organic answers, as things stand. OpenAI has been building out shopping and advertising surfaces, so paid formats exist and are growing. They sit apart from the answer itself. If someone promises you a guaranteed slot in ChatGPT's organic answers, they can't deliver it. Verify the current advertising options directly with OpenAI, since this area is moving fast.

How long does it take to show up?

There is no reliable universal timeline. Technical changes that affect whether ChatGPT Search can reach a page may be picked up sooner. Broader brand visibility takes longer, because new content and third-party coverage first have to exist and then be found. Instead of waiting for a fixed number of weeks, repeat the same buyer questions over time and watch whether your visibility is improving.

Does traditional SEO still help me rank on ChatGPT?

Yes. Crawlability, useful content, clear site structure and authoritative links can still help because ChatGPT Search needs useful web pages to retrieve. The difference is that AI visibility is not measured only by where one page ranks. You also need to watch whether your brand is mentioned, cited and described accurately in relevant answers.

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?

There can be several reasons. Your pages may be difficult to access. Your content may not answer the buyer's question clearly. Or your competitor may simply have stronger and more consistent coverage across third-party sources. Check each one before assuming a single ranking factor is responsible.

Do I need different content for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude?

Usually, you do not need three separate versions of the same page. Clear, useful and accessible content can work across multiple AI systems. But each platform retrieves and uses information differently, which is why the same brand can appear in one assistant and be missing from another.
