Microsoft Copilot SEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited in Copilot Answers

Someone from your sales team searches for your company name in Copilot. They get a clear summary with three or four sources below it, but none of them are from your company. One of the sources is even an old competitor comparison page that your team hasn't checked in over a year. Copilot gave a complete answer, but your company was not part of it. The buyer walks away with a shortlist of three or four companies, and yours is not on it. They never learn that you exist.

What is Microsoft Copilot SEO, and how does Copilot find sources?

Microsoft Copilot SEO is the work of making your pages easy for Bing to find and easy for Copilot to quote. Everything else in this guide sits under that one sentence. Start with how Copilot actually picks a source.

SEO or AEO?Same job, different name. AEO is short for Answer Engine Optimisation: getting your words inside the answer, with your site named as the source. This guide says SEO because that is what people still search for.

When Copilot uses public web search, Microsoft says it can send a search query to Bing and use the information it finds to create its answer. Some Copilot versions can also use company or connected data, so not every Copilot answer comes from the same sources.

"Grounding" just means the AI backs its answer with current information from the internet, instead of relying only on what it learned during training. Copilot does this whenever it needs something current about a company or a market.

For Copilot answers that use Bing, Bing needs to be able to find and index your public webpages first. If Bing cannot find or use a page, that page normally cannot be used as a source in Bing-powered answers. However, this does not mean that every Copilot answer comes only from Bing.

Ranking well on Google does not mean Bing can see the same pages. The two run separate systems. So the real question is not how to optimize for AI. It is how much of your site Bing can currently find.

If I had to pick one place to start, this would be it. Not the writing. The index.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO fights for a position. AEO fights to be the sentence. The work overlaps heavily, but the target moves, and so does the way you measure it. Four differences are worth holding on to.

Area

SEO

AEO

What you are aiming for

A position in the list of results

Being named as a source inside the answer

What gets picked

The page as a whole

One clear passage from the page

Where the reader ends up

On your site, if they click

Reading a summary, and clicking your link only if they want more

How you measure it

Positions, clicks, impressions

Citations, how you are described, and how often you appear

The overlap is large. A page Bing cannot reach fails at both. But the difference explains why a site can rank well and still be missing from every answer above the results.

Does Copilot use different signals than Google?

Yes, but less than the AI-SEO crowd will tell you. Microsoft publishes no weightings, so anyone quoting exact numbers is guessing. Five differences are real enough to act on, and they are in the table below.

What works better is to follow what Bing itself recommends, how it indexes sites, and how Copilot pulls from more than one source at a time. Most of Microsoft Copilot SEO is ordinary SEO done with that difference in mind.

There is one more difference worth holding on to. A Google result shows you one page at a time. Copilot may pull from several pages and write a single answer out of them.

Area

What Bing's guidance says

What to do about it

On-page clarity

Clear titles, headings and opening lines help Bing work out what a page is for.

Name the page for what it is. A service page titled "Solutions" that opens with brand story gives Bing very little to work with.

JavaScript

Bing's crawler can read pages built with JavaScript, but Bing advises keeping key content easy to reach instead of relying on scripts that load it later.

Check what Bing actually receives on your money pages, rather than assuming.

Change notification

Bing supports IndexNow, a way for your site to tell search engines the moment a page is added, changed or deleted.

Connect it to your publishing process so changes get announced instead of waited on.

Publisher controls

Bing supports settings that control whether a page can be used in chat answers.

Check whether someone switched these on defensively years ago and then forgot about them.

Multiple sources

Copilot can use multiple retrieved sources.

Keeping company facts consistent across public sources reduces conflicting information, but it does not guarantee that a particular source will be cited.

Based on Bing's public webmaster guidance and Microsoft documentation. Microsoft does not publish exact signal weightings.

The last row is the one that sits outside normal ranking work. A search result is one page in one position. A Copilot answer can pull from several pages at once. So a company described four different ways across four public profiles becomes a real problem, not just an untidy one.

Everything else is familiar work. Pages that are easy to reach. A site that loads fast. A clear menu. Real depth on your subject, and links from sites people actually read. Nobody needs a separate website for Bing.

Which technical fixes should you do first?

Access first, words later. If Bing cannot reach and read a page, rewriting that page changes nothing. Four fixes come before everything else, and the first one is free and takes an afternoon.

Focus on these four things first:

  • Check your Bing coverage
  • Use IndexNow
  • Make sure Bing's crawler can read your content
  • Keep your company information accurate

Check Bing Webmaster Tools and your website coverage

First, verify your domain in Bing Webmaster Tools. If you already use Google Search Console, you can use its settings to make this process easier.

Then check the indexing report and compare your important website pages and sitemap with the pages Bing has actually indexed. If some important pages are missing, especially pages that are important for your business, find out why.

Bing Webmaster Tools also has two checks worth knowing. URL Inspection tells you whether a page is stored in Bing's list. Live URL fetches the page right now and shows you what Bing receives. Run your biggest money pages through both.

Turn on IndexNow

IndexNow lets you tell search engines the moment a page is added, updated, or removed. Most CMS platforms have a plugin for it.

When you update a page, IndexNow can tell Bing about the change and help it discover the page faster. It still guarantees nothing. Bing may not index the page, and Copilot may not cite it.

Of everything on this list, IndexNow is the most under-used free thing available. An afternoon of setup, and you stop waiting on discovery.

Make sure Bing's crawler can actually read your page

Bingbot is the automated program Bing sends around the web to read pages. It is often called a crawler. Rendering is what happens when it loads your page and sees what is really on it.

If key text only appears after JavaScript runs in the visitor's browser, test whether Bing can load and read it. Sending the finished page from your server, instead of building it in the browser, makes that content far more dependable.

Quick way to check: open a key page, view its source, and search for one distinctive sentence from the body copy. Missing? Then that content depends on rendering before Bing can see it.

Add schema and keep your details accurate

Schema markup is a small piece of code on a page. It tells search engines plainly what the page is about: your company name, your service, your location. Visitors never see it. It just saves the machines from guessing.

Organization schema on your homepage. Product or Service schema where it genuinely applies. FAQPage schema only on pages that really contain FAQs.

Structured data helps Bing when it matches what people actually see on the page. It guarantees nothing, and wrong or misleading markup causes its own problems.

Keep your company name, address, and phone number exactly the same everywhere, including the spelling and even details like the suite number.

What this meansAfter making these changes, keep an eye on Bing Webmaster Tools. Your changes may be discovered and reported fairly quickly, but there is no guaranteed timeline for crawling, indexing, or getting a citation.Use the indexing report to see whether things are improving, and keep monitoring the results over time.

How do you write pages that Copilot can quote?

Copilot lifts passages, not whole pages. So a section that answers the question in its opening lines gets picked up, and one that warms up for three paragraphs does not. Six writing habits decide which one you have.

Put the answer early under the heading

Give the direct answer first, then add the detail. If someone asks what a service costs, put the price near the top. Do not make them read four hundred words to reach it.

Make headings descriptive

Use headings that clearly explain what the section is about. For example, "How long does an AI visibility audit take?" is much clearer than "Our Methodology."

Keep each section understandable on its own

Each section should still make sense if someone reads it on its own. That means repeating a little context you would normally cut.

Use specific details when they are accurate

Specific facts, names, dates, and numbers are easier for people and AI systems to check. Take a line like "We work with regional enterprise clients." It says nothing. Name the markets you serve, how many clients you have, or what you actually measured. Only if it is true, of course.

Keep changing information genuinely up to date

Update information when it genuinely changes, and keep the dates honest. Your sitemap, the file that lists your pages for search engines, can carry an accurate last-updated date for each one.

Publish comparison and definition pages

Buyers compare before they decide. If you have no comparison pages, the only ones they will find are your competitors'.

It's also fine to admit where a competitor is better. A fair comparison reads as more trustworthy, not less.

This is the part most brands avoid writing, and it is exactly what buyers are searching for.

Which off-site sources help build trust?

Because your own site is only one voice. Copilot can pull from several sites inside a single answer, so what a directory, a review platform or your LinkedIn page says about you ends up in that answer too.

Depending on your industry, useful sources can include:

  • Wikipedia and Wikidata: Only use these if your company genuinely meets their requirements for being listed.
  • Industry directories and review websites: Sites such as G2, Capterra, and Clutch can help. Keep your profiles complete, use current information, and encourage genuine reviews.
  • Trade publications and local business media: A strong article or feature about your company can be more valuable than publishing lots of low-quality guest posts.
  • LinkedIn: Keep your LinkedIn company information accurate and make sure it matches the information on your website.
  • Podcasts, panels, and expert quotes: These can also help because transcripts and show notes create written content that search engines can find.
  • Community discussions and Q&A websites: Be active in places where people genuinely discuss your industry. Having real employees participate is better than using anonymous accounts.

Start with the sources your buyers already check

You cannot work on all of these at once, so pick by where your buyers actually go. In most B2B categories that means two or three review platforms and one trade publication, not a long list of directories nobody reads.

Old profiles matter as much as new ones. A directory listing with a service you stopped offering, or a price from three years ago, sits in public and contradicts your own site. Go through the profiles you already have before creating more.

Keep your company information consistent

Make sure important information about your company is the same on your website and trusted third-party websites. If different websites describe your company in different ways, it can make your brand harder for AI systems to understand.

Create one clear description of your company and use the same wording across your website, LinkedIn page, directory profiles, and press materials.

Consistent public information compared with conflicting public information
Consistent company information reduces conflicting signals across public sources. It does not guarantee that Copilot will cite or repeat a particular description.

How do you measure Copilot citations and visibility?

Not with rankings. There is no position four inside a Copilot answer. Four other checks tell you the truth, and one of them is a Bing report most teams have never opened.

Check AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools now provides AI Performance data in public preview. It can show when pages from your website are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and some partner experiences.

You can check which URLs are being referenced and how your citation activity changes over time. This can give you better insights than only testing prompts manually.

Monitor indexing and impressions

Track impressions, clicks, and indexing status over time. This tells you whether Bing can find and use your key pages at all. Check it before you spend energy chasing citations.

Use referral traffic as extra evidence

Check your website analytics for traffic coming from Bing and Copilot-related sources, where that information is available.

The numbers will look small next to normal search traffic. They still matter. Someone arriving from an AI answer has already had your company described to them.

Test a fixed set of buyer questions

Create a fixed list of real questions that your customers might ask. Include different types of questions, such as category questions, comparisons, problems, and questions about your brand.

Ask the same questions each time so you can compare the results. Check whether your brand appears in Copilot, how it is described, and which sources are cited.

The type of question can make a big difference to the result. For example, in one Xtrusio audit, a company had the highest visibility score among its competitors. But most of that score came from people searching specifically for the company's own brand name.

Xtrusio then tested 25 real buyer questions across three AI assistants. The company appeared in none of the 75 answers. Its competitors appeared in most of them.

So a healthy brand-name score can sit on top of an almost empty category presence. The questions you test matter more than the score any tool hands you.

This is the finding I would put in front of a CEO first. A dashboard can look green while the category is closed to you.

Where do teams waste their time?

On work that looks productive and moves nothing. Four habits come up again and again. Every one of them fills a status report, and none of them get you cited.

Publishing large numbers of low-value pages

Search engines only spend so much time on your site each visit. Hundreds of thin pages burn that time and leave you with a pile of addresses that help nobody, not the reader and not Bing. More pages does not mean more visibility.

Adding FAQ schema to pages without real FAQs

Don't add FAQ schema just because you think it lifts visibility. If the page holds no real questions and answers, the code says one thing and the page shows another. It won't help, and Bing warns against it directly.

Blocking crawlers without checking which ones

Be careful when blocking crawlers. If you accidentally block Bingbot, Bing may not be able to crawl important pages or discover your updates. This can reduce your chances of appearing in Bing search and Copilot answers.

Treating Copilot optimization as a completely separate department

Don't treat Copilot work as something separate from SEO. The foundation is the same: a site that search engines can reach and read, content worth reading, and pages that load properly.

Quick checkIf your brand is not appearing in the AI answers that matter to your business, check these four things first before trying to find a complicated reason:1. Can Bing find and access the page?2. Can Bing read the page content properly, or does the content only appear after JavaScript runs?3. Does the page clearly and directly answer the question?4. Do trusted third-party websites describe your company in the same way as your own website? If any of these checks fail, fix that problem first before looking for more complex explanations.

See how your brand shows up across buyer questions

Xtrusio asks the questions your buyers actually type, not just your brand name, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. Then it shows which brands and sources come back in those answers. It is pre-launch right now, so access runs through the waitlist.

Frequently asked questions

How do I optimize our website for Microsoft Copilot answers?

Start with Bing discovery and indexing, because when Copilot uses web search it can draw on information returned from Bing. Then make the content easier to interpret: descriptive headings, the answer early in each section, passages that make sense on their own, and accurate specifics. Finally, keep the way credible third-party sources describe your company consistent with your own site.

Does Copilot use different signals than Google when it picks sources?

Microsoft does not publish signal weightings, so exact comparisons are guesswork. What Bing does ask for is clear titles, headings and opening lines. It warns against hiding key content behind scripts that load late. And it supports IndexNow, so you can tell it the moment a page changes. A Copilot answer can also draw on several retrieved sources at once, so consistent public information matters alongside any single ranking position.

What has to be true before our brand can be cited in a Copilot answer?

For Bing-grounded web answers, three things help. Bing has to be able to discover and use your public pages. Those pages need a clear passage that addresses the question being asked. And credible independent sources should describe your company consistently. None of this guarantees a citation, and not every Copilot answer comes only from public web sources.

How long does Microsoft Copilot SEO take to show results?

There is no guaranteed timeframe. Indexing changes can be reflected relatively quickly in Bing Webmaster Tools, especially when IndexNow notifies Bing that a URL has changed. Content and off-site work usually take longer, because other sites have to be published and crawled first. Measure the trend across repeated checks rather than counting weeks.

Do we need separate content for Copilot and ChatGPT?

No. Accessible pages, clear structure and consistent public information help across assistants. What differs is the retrieval layer underneath. When Copilot uses web search it can draw on Bing, so Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow are Copilot-specific levers worth using whatever else you are doing.
