Why Isn't My Brand Showing in ChatGPT? The 2026 AEO and GEO Guide
Short answer
Usually because the pages ChatGPT finds for that question say more, or say it more clearly, about your competitors than about you, or because ChatGPT can't reach your key pages. Check that OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, make your service pages state plainly what you do and for whom, and get accurate mentions on the review sites, directories and comparison pages ChatGPT cites. Ranking well on Google helps, but it doesn't guarantee a mention. Xtrusio shows you which of these is holding you back: it asks seven AI engines your buyers' questions, keeps every answer and every cited page, and shows you when an engine cites the page you fixed.

How ChatGPT decides which brands to name
The ChatGPT app often searches the web before it answers, especially when the question is about products, suppliers or comparisons. It reads the pages that search returns and builds its answer from them. OpenAI's search guide explains that ChatGPT can rewrite your question into its own search queries, that location can influence results and that memory can affect search.
So your brand is named when the pages ChatGPT finds name you clearly and credibly. If those pages are a rival's comparison post or an old profile with your former name, you lose the answer even if your own site is good.
Two things to settle before you diagnose anything:
- Know what is missing. A mention names the company. A citation links to a source. A recommendation presents a company as a fit for the buyer. A page can be cited without the company being recommended.
- Use the buyer's real question. "How does contract management work?" and "Which contract management company fits a multilingual legal team?" ask for different answers. Asking about your brand by name checks its description of you, not whether new buyers will find you.
The five reasons your brand is missing
Reason | How to check | How to fix |
|---|---|---|
Your pages are not among the ones ChatGPT finds when it searches | Ask the exact buyer question, open the sources ChatGPT lists and see whether any of your pages appear | Publish a page that answers that exact question near the top, in the words buyers use, and link to it from your main pages |
The facts about your brand are weak or conflicting | Compare your name, description, services and location across your site, LinkedIn, directories and review profiles | Choose one approved description and correct every profile that differs, starting with the ones ChatGPT cites |
You are not mentioned on the sites ChatGPT cites | List the outside sites cited for your buyer questions and search each one for your brand | Earn accurate coverage on those exact sites through reviews, partner pages, guest posts, original research and PR |
Crawler access is blocked | Read your robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot and ask your hosting or firewall owner whether it reaches the exact service page | Allow OAI-SearchBot on public pages and remove security challenges on the pages that should answer buyers |
The question is answered by comparison and review pages | Check whether the cited pages are "best of" lists, side-by-side comparisons or review sites | Get accurately listed on the comparison and review pages that are cited, and publish your own fair comparison page |
More than one reason can apply at once. Fix the one you have evidence for first, then check again rather than assuming one repair solves everything.
What to look for, reason by reason
Your pages don't answer the question
A service page should say what you do, who you serve, where you work and which requirements you can meet, with the useful answer near the top. "A growth partner for ambitious teams" does not tell ChatGPT that you provide a particular service in a particular market.
Also check that the important text is in the page your server delivers, not only in what a browser renders after JavaScript runs. Our guide on how to check if AI can read your website walks a developer through it.
The facts about you conflict
Keep your name, domain, services, location and approved description the same across your site and important profiles. Look hard for outdated pages after a launch, acquisition or rebrand. Record each wrong claim with its exact URL and ask the owner of that page to correct it. You cannot fix a wrong answer by asking ChatGPT what it knows about you; you fix it by changing what it reads.
Other sites don't mention you
Start with the pages ChatGPT actually cites for your buyer questions. A review, partner page, industry report or original research gives the engine evidence beyond your own claims. Treat each cited site as a lead: check that it genuinely covers your category before you pitch it.
ChatGPT can't reach your pages
OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says opting it out keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. GPTBot relates to model training and is a separate choice: you can allow search while disallowing GPTBot. ChatGPT-User covers certain visits a user triggers and is not an automatic crawler.
Check the exact page, its redirects and any firewall or bot challenge. A homepage that opens for you does not prove the service page opens for the crawler.
Comparison pages decide the answer
Questions like "best X for Y" or "X vs Y" are often answered from comparison and review pages. If those pages leave you out, so will the answer. Being listed accurately on them, and publishing your own clear comparison, gives ChatGPT something to cite. For the full playbook, read how to show up in ChatGPT answers.
How Xtrusio diagnoses and fixes this across seven engines
Xtrusio is our product. It finds which of the five reasons applies to you and proves when the fix has worked.
It asks the questions your buyers ask. Xtrusio puts your buyers' questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It keeps every full answer, every brand named and every cited page, so you see who wins each question and which sources the engine trusted.
It shows what the engines searched for. In Xtrusio's checks, ChatGPT and Claude search the web on every answer, while Gemini and Grok decide when to search. Xtrusio records the searches ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok run, so you can see whether your pages appear in what the engine looked at.
It measures where you stand. You get visibility, share of voice, sentiment, average position and citations, by engine, topic and buyer persona.
It plans the fix. For each buyer question, Xtrusio drafts a content plan from the searches the engines actually ran and the sites they cite, with the right channel for each piece: your blog, LinkedIn, Medium, Reddit, YouTube, guest posts or PR. You approve the plan.
It does the work. Xtrusio writes and scores articles, checks every link before approval and publishes to your blog where it is connected. It drafts LinkedIn posts, YouTube scripts, Medium essays and press releases from each article. Link Strategy tracks each guest post, PR placement and published piece through to its live URL and shows whether an engine cites the live URL for the question it targets.
It proves the result. A page counts as a win only when an engine's answer to the question it targets cites that exact URL in a later scan. Xtrusio also connects to Google Search Console and flags pages losing position, demand or freshness, with the reason in plain words.
Pricing: free self-serve plan; managed service with a free trial, then tiered plans (details on request).
How will you know the fix worked?
A corrected profile or a working page is a delivered change. A later answer that names you or cites your page is the result. Measure the result.
- Pick 10 real buyer questions: category, problem, comparison and brand questions.
- Save each answer and the pages it cites before you change anything.
- Make one fix per question, based on the reason you found.
- Ask the same questions again under the same conditions, and keep ChatGPT's results separate from other engines.
- Count a win only when the answer cites the exact page you fixed or names your brand accurately.
One answer is never enough to judge a trend. Our guide to setting up brand monitoring in AI answers covers building the baseline.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT's recommendations?
You can buy an ad in ChatGPT, but not a place in the recommendation. OpenAI began testing ads in February 2026 and has since expanded the pilot to more countries. Ads run on the Free and Go tiers, are labeled sponsored, sit apart from the answer, and OpenAI states they do not influence what the answer says.
Does ranking well on Google mean I will show up in ChatGPT?
No. Google ranks pages; ChatGPT composes an answer from the sources it finds for that question. A page-one result can still be left out. Ask the exact buyer question, open ChatGPT's sources and check whether they name your company and describe it correctly.
How long does it take to become visible in ChatGPT?
There is no fixed timetable. When ChatGPT searches the web, a corrected public page can help once it has been crawled, but that does not guarantee it will be chosen. Recheck the same buyer questions and their sources over time.
What if ChatGPT describes my company incorrectly?
Wrong descriptions usually come from old, unclear or inconsistent information online. You cannot edit the answer, but you can change what it reads: correct your own pages and profiles, get accurate descriptions onto sites you do not own, and say the same thing everywhere.
