OpenAI Models in Google Cloud Model Garden: Access, Billing and What to Prepare
Short answer
OpenAI Google Cloud Model Garden models are entering a limited private preview for select enterprise customers, not a general release for every project. Google names GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for this preview; OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks. Purchases will be transacted through Google Cloud Marketplace, with eligible commitment spend available to draw down. OpenAI announcement · Google Cloud announcement

If you are evaluating OpenAI Google Cloud Model Garden models, first establish which access stage applies to your organization. The announcement does not mean every Google Cloud project can select a frontier model today. Google describes a limited private preview; OpenAI describes the wider release as a plan for the coming weeks. Neither announcement supplies a universal production setup procedure or a public price sheet for the new offering.
What is available now?
- GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna: Google Cloud says these are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers. Ask whether your organization is eligible; do not assume access in an ordinary project.
- Google Cloud API access: Google says preview customers can build with the models through its APIs now. Obtain the preview-specific documentation and access details before writing integration code.
- Local Codex CLI and Desktop connection: Google says participating customers can connect these workflows to its Gemini platform for inference starting today. This is a preview route, not a claim that every Codex installation has it enabled.
- General availability: OpenAI plans this for the coming weeks. Wait for a release notice and current model documentation before treating the service as broadly available.
- Google Antigravity and Gemini Agent: OpenAI says these integrations are coming soon. Do not build a rollout plan around a connection that has not shipped.
The two companies describe the future Gemini integration with different product wording: OpenAI says Gemini Agent, while Google says Gemini for business. Use each announcement's own name until a product page explains whether those labels refer to the same surface. Both describe Antigravity availability as upcoming. Which OpenAI models did Google name?
Google names GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for the initial private preview. Its announcement positions Astra for demanding coding, computer use and research work; Sol for agentic coding and professional tasks at lower cost than Astra; and Luna for faster, cost-conscious everyday work. Those are Google's product descriptions, not independent benchmarks or guarantees for your workload. Build a task-specific evaluation when access is granted. Google Cloud announcement
This is different from the older gpt-oss open-model entries already visible in Google documentation. Finding an OpenAI name in Model Garden today does not prove that your project has access to the newly announced frontier models. Google's current open-model access guide lists gpt-oss separately from partner models. Google open-model documentation
How will buying and commitment spend work?
The purchase path has two parts: Model Garden is where customers discover and use the offering; Google Cloud Marketplace handles the transaction. OpenAI says enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments will be able to draw down those commitments for eligible purchases. Google adds that usage will appear on a Google Cloud invoice and says it will count toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers. Confirm the treatment of your particular contract and billing account with your procurement team before budgeting. OpenAI announcement · Google Cloud announcement
Google's existing Marketplace documentation explains the generic management path for AI models already procured from its marketplace. It is useful background, but it is not an OpenAI-specific setup guide for the new private preview. Google Cloud Marketplace documentation
What can developers prepare before wider release?
- Choose one workload to evaluate. Write down a representative task, acceptable output quality, latency and budget. A coding agent and a customer-facing answer service need different tests.
- Separate access from evaluation. Have the cloud owner confirm private-preview eligibility or wait for the general-availability notice. Keep a list of the published model IDs, regions, quotas, IAM roles and prices that must be checked once official documentation appears.
- Check procurement terms. Ask whether the correct Google Cloud billing account and commitment agreement cover the planned Marketplace purchase. The announcement's commitment language is a route to verify, not a substitute for your own contract.
- Prepare a small, permissioned test set. Use cases with known expected outcomes and remove sensitive material unless your organization's approved data controls allow it. Google describes governance controls for this integration, but your team still needs to verify its own data policies and preview terms.
- Keep the integration reversible. Record the baseline from the model your application uses today. Compare the new model on the same tasks after access is granted, then decide whether its quality, speed and cost justify a switch.
These are planning steps. The companies have not published a general OpenAI-on-Google-Cloud command sequence in the announcements, so a purported universal click-by-click tutorial would be premature.
Where does AI visibility fit?
Moving an internal model workload to another cloud does not, by itself, tell a brand whether public AI answers mention or cite it. For that separate question, Xtrusio records AI answers and citation evidence so a team can inspect how it appears across monitored queries. Use those observations to decide which public claims and source pages need clearer evidence; do not infer a visibility gain from this hosting announcement alone.

Frequently asked questions
Are OpenAI frontier models generally available in Google Cloud Model Garden?
No. On October 21, 2026, Google Cloud describes a private preview for select enterprise customers, while OpenAI plans general availability in the coming weeks.
Can an existing Google Cloud commitment pay for the models?
OpenAI says eligible enterprises will be able to draw down Google Cloud spend commitments for purchases transacted through Marketplace. Verify the treatment of your specific agreement with procurement.
Are Antigravity and Gemini Agent integrations ready to use?
The announcements describe those integrations as coming soon. Google also mentions Gemini for business. Wait for product-specific release notes and setup documentation.
Does this mean Codex itself has moved to Google Cloud?
No such change is stated. Google describes a way for preview customers to connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to its Gemini platform for inference. OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
